McDowell Nature Preserve
Whenever I visit my aunt in South Carolina I find myself in North Carolina. Don't worry I'm not trying to trick you or sound profound here. Since my aunt lives next to the border of both Carolinas, I have noticed that many times I end up hiking in both states.
That is the case here. One day I was researching nature preserves, trying to find somewhere to go hiking. My aunt suggested I check out a place called McDowell Nature Preserve and I'm so glad she did!
McDowell Nature Preserve is located in Charlotte, NC. This scenic park stretches around a beautiful lake with several trail options available. There is also a nature center which when I visited was busy with students it seemed. Before you start your hike I would recommend you pick up a map. Since there are several starting points, without it you will be fine but it would be easier if you had one.
Although when I went I didn't check out the Nature Center, I did notice that it seemed like a class was being taught. When I went by I did read the signs there and there are educational programs that are offered. If that sounds like something that interests you then please check out this link.
This park offers a nice range of trail options. Some trails go along the lake and are asphalt while others are throughout the woods on dirt paths. There are also several benches and picnic areas to choose from if that is more your style.
All in all this park was lovely and very beautiful along the lake-view side. I enjoyed my time there and was able to relax throughout my visit. If you are ever in the Charlotte area, I would recommend you check this nature preserve out!
